They call it golf because all the other four letter words were taken

We created The Fairway because we are consumers ourselves – we are golf, racket sports and country club lifestyle enthusiasts and we know what people like. We we were frustrated with the current state of online product discovery. Online reviews are often:

  • Biased
  • Low quality
  • Random (just throw something up and see if it works)

Even the good sites are confusing. Why is Time magazine telling us which golf clubs to buy? As much as we feel for legacy media’s failing business models, we don’t see how they pivoted to experts of all products overnight.

In our own searches we also wondered why the results for the same product are so different – put any two legacy media reviews for the same product side by side and you will likely see dramatically different outputs. And yet they are both likely created by “experts” in the field.

Conclusion: Experts know very little, and it is hard to rely on any one set of recommendations. If you had time, you would review them all, try out a few, talk to your friends and local pros.

That is the product we offer at The Fairway. We believe that our rankings and reviews are the highest quality available anywhere online for the products discussed.

Our methodology

We start with the full list of all the highest quality reviews. We begin with hundreds of products, all of which have been rated “best” by someone.

There is no one “correct” review, but there are threads of commonality between them. This is where the truth lives.

We rank based on several other factors: sales, because products are best selling for a reason. For any product with surging sales we will add weight. We review market research to identify the top selling products. We then read the reviews we trust the most. We weight the best seller list according to the most frequently top reviewed products. We throw out any that appear to be biased.

Rating sites will often rank according to affiliate payouts, and sometimes this is obvious. If a site issues a glowing review of a less popular product we will investigate, and throw it out. You would have no way of knowing what the other “unbiased” review sites are getting paid, but we do.

We also give some weight to customer ratings on retailer sites, though these are often biased.

We call upon our own network of experts to review our work before publishing. Their feedback provides a final check.

The resulting formula is roughly: Top review weighting + sales weighting – biased reviews + customer reviews + expert filtering = our recommendations
